Racial justice is a goal rather than a reality. Deep-seated systemic racism and inequities are still part of the fabric of our institutions today. To achieve racial justice, we must dismantle systemic racism and work to repair centuries of harm inflicted on communities of color.
The U.S. was constructed through intentional, brutal genocide of Indigenous peoples and the occupation of their land. It was birthed through enslaving, terrorizing, and exploiting Africans, notably in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. And nation-making continued through Jim Crow, through racist immigration policies, through redlining, through policing, through mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex.
Colonization, slavery, and xenophobia are not confined to the past; rather, they are ongoing processes. Every aspect of life in the U.S.—for people of color and white people— continues to be shaped profoundly by racism and white supremacy.
Racial justice is elemental to innumerable human rights, including the right to equality and non-discrimination, the right to health, the right to education, the right to life, and the right to safety.
