Restrictions on the Risqué: Censorship & Sexual Freedom in 2024
December 23, 2024 • 12:30 pm ET
In 2024, the intersection of sexual freedom and censorship was a rapidly evolving battleground shaped by shifting political, cultural, and technological forces. Our program this month explores the complex challenges and emerging opportunities surrounding the censorship of sexual freedom in a world where digital platforms, government policies, and social movements increasingly influence what can be expressed, shared, and consumed. We’ll examine the legal and ethical implications of censorship in both public and private spaces, addressing topics such as the regulation of adult content, online surveillance, and the growing influence of AI in moderating expression. We will also consider the potential for activism and digital tools to resist or navigate these restrictions, highlighting grassroots efforts, international human rights perspectives, and the role of digital communities in promoting sexual autonomy. We will also look ahead to the challenges and opportunities we’re forecasting in 2025. We investigate the balance between regulation and freedom and explore how new forms of resistance and empowerment can emerge in response to increasing attempts to control sexual expression in the digital age.
