Carlie Steen

Carlie Steen is a long-time advocate on issues related to gender and racial equity, with more than 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including expertise in fundraising, philanthropy, policy and advocacy, and organizational and program development. Her personal and professional activism has bridged immigrant and worker rights, economic justice, LGBTQ issues, racial equity, and reproductive rights. An ardent Midwesterner (and raised in the same county as Woodhull’s namesake), Carlie most recently served as Director, Programs for The New York Women’s Foundation, where she focused on the intersections of economic justice, safety, and reproductive and sexual rights. Previously she was Program Manager with Stonewall Community Foundation, where she was responsible for the conception, implementation, and evaluation of Stonewall’s education, grants, and scholarship programs, while providing technical assistance and capacity building support for their grantee partners. She has also served as Executive Director of New York Communities Organizing Fund, Inc.; Director of Public Policy with Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health; policy staffer at The LGBT Center in Manhattan, and Policy and Legislative Counsel for the Detroit City Council President. Carlie holds a JD from the University of Detroit School of Law and a BS from Bowling Green State University. A long-time Brooklynite, Carlie shares her life with a fabulously patient wife and two lovely and exasperating children.
