Report on the State of Sexual Freedom in the U.S.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — July 27, 2010 — Washington, DC
“The State of Sexual Freedom in the U.S.” to be released September 23, 2010 at Sexual Freedom Day
WHAT
September 23, 2010, Sexual Freedom Day at the National Press Club (Washington, DC) comprised of workshops, panels, discussion, and celebration, coincides with the release of the first Annual Report on the “State of Sexual Freedom in the U.S.”
This date also marks the birthday of Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927), a fiery, radical, progressive suffragette who advocated for sexual freedom in her day, and was, among her many “firsts”, the first woman to run for President of the United States.
THE REPORT
State of Sexual Freedom in the U.S.
For the first time a comprehensive Report will be made available that focuses on the transcendent truth that sexual rights are human rights. “This new tool will help the media, lawmakers, advocacy organizations, and researchers sharpen the questions that arise when working towards equal rights and protections for all citizens regardless of sexual orientation, gender identification, or sexual practice”, said Carol Queen, Woodhull Freedom Foundation Board President.
Sexual Freedom Day events are designed to showcase various aspects of the Report and invite participation and further action around the issues, challenges, and opportunities reflected in its findings.
The Woodhull Freedom Foundation commissioned the material this year, inviting submissions from diverse and nationally recognized contributors. The Report offers the first cogent and modern exposition of the current state of sexual freedom in this country, illuminating what has been accomplished and what still needs to be done to bring about universal sexual freedom — the end of repression of, and legal discrimination against, individuals who assert their human right to express themselves sexually in any safe manner of their choosing.
Said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last month, “Just as I was very proud to say the obvious more than 15 years ago in Beijing that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights, well, let me say today that human rights are gay rights and gay rights are human rights, once and for all.”
Indeed, all sexual freedoms are fundamental human rights!
